LIPA receives the E.F. Scattergood Reliability Award from the American Public Power Association. This utility services award recognizes a community-owned utility that has enhanced the prestige of public power through outstanding service to customers.
History of LIPA
South Fork Wind becomes commercially operational at 132 megawatts, powering 70,000 homes across Long Island and the Rockaways. This is the first utility-scale offshore wind farm in the United States and the first in federal waters.
In July, LIPA received its fifth credit rating upgrade from Fitch Ratings – an A+ rating with a stable outlook. The agency noted LIPA’s improved leverage ratio, which significantly decreased and is expected to decline further in future years from the Board’s policy on Fiscal Sustainability, first approved in 2015.
John Rhodes is appointed Acting CEO by Governor Hochul.
LIPA issues an Integrated Resource Plan, an action plan for the next five to ten years that will identify the key actions and investments that LIPA will undertake to meet New York State clean energy goals while continuing to meet the electricity needs of its customers reliably and cost-effectively.
Tracy Edwards is appointed as Chair to the LIPA Board of Trustees by Governor Kathy Hochul. Ms. Edwards is the first female appointee to this role.
LIPA receives the Sue Kelly Community Service Award from the American Public Power Association, which recognizes utilities for good neighbor activities that show commitment to their local community.

The South Fork Wind project begins construction with a groundbreaking ceremony, marking the start of New York’s first offshore wind farm.
In August 2020, Tropical Storm Isaias hits Long Island, leaving over 646,000 customers without power 8-9 days. LIPA formed an Isaias Task Force to undertake a comprehensive, independent investigation into the failure of PSEG Long Island’s communications and service restoration systems during the storm. This would lead to a renegotiated management services contract with PSEG Long Island with enhanced standards for performance and accountability.
