What is Green Power?
Green power is electricity that is generated using cleaner, renewable resources like wind, hydropower and bio-energy. LIPA is concerned about our natural world, and the Green Choice Program is just one of our environmental efforts. Learn more  from our Frequently Asked Questions.

Make a Difference with Green Choice
LIPA’s Green Choice Program is an easy way that you can have an impact on the environment. LIPA makes it possible for you to purchase “environmental attributes” so you can support the development of electric generation using cleaner, renewable resources.

Environmental Attributes
Long Islanders who enroll in Green Choice pay a few additional dollars each month to purchase “environmental attributes” which support the building of green electric generation for our future. What’s an attribute? An environmental attribute represents the reduction of green house gases associated with replacing old, inefficient electric generation facilities with “green", renewable resources.

Green Choice and Your Bill
Right now, LIPA relies in large part on fossil fuels like oil and natural gas to generate your electricity. Those costs are part of your electric rates. A Green Choice customer will continue to pay the same electric rates. The dollars you add to your LIPA payment to support green power could lessen the time that we are dependent on fossil fuels, and that could have a positive impact on rates in the future. LIPA Green Choice is up to You LIPA’s Green Choice Program is entirely voluntary and you can choose to support a variety of renewable resources. Green Marketers or Green ESCO’s (Energy Service Companies) partner with LIPA to manage the Green Choice Program and make sure your dollars support the renewable resource you choose…like wind, hydro-electricity or bioenergy.
