How to Guide for Small Wind Explorer
LIPA’s new Small Wind Explorer is designed to help LIPA customers evaluate the potential for a small onsite wind turbine based on average wind speeds at three different hub heights. “Hub” height is defined as the distance from the ground to the center-line of the turbine rotor. The Small Wind Explorer features an interactive Long Island map which calculates average wind speeds for general or specific locations. The wind speeds are generated by information entered into the three grey boxes below the map.
Note: Pop-up blockers must be turned off in order to use the Wind Explorer tool.
- Step 1: Click on the link to LIPA’s Small Wind Explorer via LIPA’s Web site.
- Step 2: Select a Hub Height (80, 100 or 120 feet) in the first grey box below the map. *
- Step 3: Enter your address and town in the
second grey box (“Enter Location”) and click GO.
(Option 2: Click anywhere on the Map to mark a general location with a push pin and click “Generate Report” in the 3rd grey box) - Step 4: The Small Wind Explorer will generate your map location with average wind speed at the designated hub height. **
- Step 5: Click on “Generate Report” for a complete customer wind report at your location.
- Step 6: Select “Customer Report” and click OK. ***
- Step 7: Enter your information under Landowner name, location and city/town.
- Step 8: Select ‘Agreement to terms of use’ and then SUBMIT.
- Step 9: A detailed Small Wind Explorer customer report will be generated for your location including average wind energy potential for all 3 hub heights, estimated wind resource and annual energy, wind rose and resource map.
- Step 10: Click “Printer Friendly Report” box in upper right hand corner.
- Step 11: If your wind resource estimate meets the recommended guidelines, we suggest you contact at least two participating wind installers to discuss whether your location is suitable for a small wind turbine. *The hub heights of 80, 100 and 120 feet represent typical small wind installations on Long Island and illustrate the different average wind speed potentials at those heights at a specific or general location.
** To view wind speed at other hub heights, simply change the hub height designation in the first grey box.
*** The “Professional Report” option is
designed for participating wind installers only.
