Renewable Energy
Why Renewable Energy?
Working together for a more energy-efficient Long Island
- Environmentally Friendly: Renewable energy technologies are clean resources that do not impact the environment as harshly as conventional energy technologies, especially when it comes to the emission of greenhouse gases.
- Renewable: While other energy sources are finite, like coal and oil, renewable energy from the wind and sun replenishes itself and will never run out.
- Economy: Renewable energy investment in the US helps keep your energy dollars here to create jobs and grow local economies. When we invest in manufacturing facilities here to produce ‘green’ energy technologies like wind and solar, we create jobs and products that are homegrown and reduce the money we spend on costly energy imports.
- Security: Conventional energy sources are vulnerable to political unrest, trade disputes and other disruptions. Renewable technologies provide an independent energy supply that is safe, secure and free from price fluctuations or conflict.
- Managing your Energy Bills: Think of renewable energy as a ‘long-term investment’ that protects you against future electricity price increases. In other words, when you purchase a solar or small wind energy system, you are essentially buying your electricity ‘up front’ for the next 25 years or more at today’s prices! It is a ‘green’ investment that keeps paying you back day after day…and helps you manage your energy costs in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way.
LIPA's Environmental Stewardship
LIPA is a national leader in renewable and energy efficiency programs. We are committed to offering our customers clean, sustainable energy options which help us reduce our dependence on fossil fuels while ensuring our ability to meet future energy needs responsibly.
- LIPA was honored in SEPA’s Top 10 for Utility Solar Integration Rankings among all US investor and public power companies in the category of Total Solar Electric Capacity (MW).
- LIPA also ranked in SEPA’s Top 10 category of Total Solar Electric Capacity per Customer (MW) for a public power utility for grid-connected solar capacity in megawatts located on the customer side of the meter, all of which are solar photovoltaic (PV) installations.
- LIPA is committed to adding more renewable energy resources that support New York State’s Renewable Portfolio Standard which mandates that 25% of New York’s electricity be produced with clean, renewable energy sources by 2013.
LIPA continues to partner with community and environmental organizations throughout Long Island, including Renewable Energy Long Island, The Neighborhood Network, Citizens Campaign for the Environment and Habitat for Humanity in Nassau and Suffolk Counties to educate our customers about the many benefits of renewable energy. We invite you to partner with us … together, we can manage our costs by becoming more energy efficient and using more renewable energy. Together we can save money, energy and help protect our environmental resources.
