Advanced Power Strips
Advanced power strips (also referred to as energy-saving surge protectors) can be a useful means for saving energy and they allow you to have the power to some devices automatically controlled based on whether a primary device is on, or off.
As many electronic devices continue to draw power even when off, cutting power at the outlet maximizes savings. Most energy-saving surge protectors have 2 always-on outlets, a master (control) outlet, and 2-6 controlled outlets that automatically turn off or on as the master appliance is turned off or on. For a home entertainment system, for instance, plug items such as a DVR or cable box into the "always-on" sockets, a television into the "master socket", and the sound system, VCR, and game console into the controlled sockets. When the television is off, power will be automatically cut to the controlled sockets and restored when the television is turned back on.

TIP:
Many electric items in your home continue to draw power
when they are switched off and still plugged in. This is
referred to as “phantom load” or “stand-by power”. In the
average home, seventy-five percent of the electricity used
to power home electronics is consumed while the products are
turned off. Avoid phantom load by simply unplugging the item
when not in use.
