LIPA Partners with Northport VA Medical Center to Save Facility over $300,000 Annually Through Major Efficiency Upgrades

Northport, N.Y.—The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) has partnered with the Northport VA Medical Center (VA) to complete a major retrofit project upgrading the facility with energy efficient lighting equipment. The project is expected to save the medical center approximately $330,000 annually in electric costs.

“LIPA is extremely proud and honored to work with the Northport VA Medical Center on this energy efficiency project,” said LIPA Chief Operating Officer Michael D. Hervey. “By taking advantage of LIPA’s rebates and incentives, this special facility will not only reduce their carbon footprint and lower operating costs, but the rebates and incentives will enable the VA to reinvest those funds into critical services they provide for our veterans.”

“Northport VA Medical Center remains committed to its goals of energy innovation and environmental stewardship,” said facility Director Philip C. Moschitta. “Our partnership with LIPA has provided opportunities to advance toward these goals to curtail energy consumption, reduce our carbon footprint, and improve building sustainability,” he added.

“Northport VA’s participation in LIPA’s Efficiency Long Island program is a win-win for both taxpayers and our Long Island veterans,” said Senator Chuck Schumer. “I urge all Long Islanders to contact LIPA to learn more about this great program. Improving our energy efficiency reduces pollution, reduces our dependence on foreign fossil fuel and – best of all -- lowers our energy bills.”

“By working with the Northport VA to save them over $300,000 annually, LIPA is not only helping to take better care of our veterans, but is honoring their service,” said Congressman Steve Israel. “Instead of sending that money to petro-dollar dictators that contradict American values - the Northport VA will be able to provide more services and better care to the men and women who have fought to protect our rights and freedoms.”

The $1.1 million project replaced or retrofitted more than 8,000 inefficient fixtures and installed over 15,000 energy efficient high-performance lamps and ballasts. Through these improvements, it is estimated that the Northport VA Medical will save up to 2.1 million kilowatt hours (kWh) per year and reduce its peak electric demand by an estimated 454 kilowatts (kW). Through its participation in LIPA’s Commercial Efficiency Program the hospital was able to offset the cost of the project with a $199,672 LIPA rebate.

Louis J. Errichiello, P.E., CEM, Northport VA Medical Center’s Energy Manager said, “The facility’s comprehensive program of energy innovation involves various efforts such as system efficiency improvements, applications of renewable energy, and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. VA’s program includes initiatives such as lighting efficiency upgrades, boiler plant modifications, natural gas conversion, geothermal energy, solar power, and more. We are pleased to work with LIPA on these very important endeavors as we move toward substantial reduction of energy consumption.”

In addition to the energy benefits brought about by the lighting efficiency project, there are significant environmental gains as well. The project generated some 15,000 pounds of recycled materials, and will reduce the VA’s greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 1,180 tons per year.

The Commercial Efficiency program is one component of LIPA’s Efficiency Long Island. Efficiency Long Island is a customer-funded, 10-year, $924 million energy efficiency program which offers a wide array of incentives, rebates and initiatives to LIPA’s residential and commercial customers to assist them in reducing their energy usage and thereby lowering their bills.

LIPA, a non-profit municipal electric provider, owns the retail electric Transmission and Distribution System on Long Island and provides electric service to more than 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. LIPA is the 2nd largest municipal electric utility in the nation in terms of electric revenues, 3rd largest in terms of customers served and the 7th largest in terms of electricity delivered. In 2010, LIPA outperformed all other overhead electric utilities in New York State for frequency of service interruptions, and ranked second for duration of service interruptions. LIPA does not provide natural gas service or own any on-island generating assets. More information about LIPA can be found online at: http://www.lipower.org.
