LIPA Board Names New Chief Operating Officer

New COO Will Serve as Interim Head of LIPA Until CEO is Appointed

Uniondale, NY - Today, the LIPA Board of Trustees appointed Michael Hervey, Senior VP of Operations, as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of LIPA. Following the departure of current CEO Kevin Law on September 6, 2010, Mr. Hervey will perform the duties of CEO during the interim period until a new President and CEO is appointed by the LIPA Board and confirmed by the New York State Senate.

Mike Hervey has served in several senior level positions at LIPA since 2000, most recently as Senior VP of Operations. Mr. Hervey has over 29 years of electric utility experience. “The Board of Trustees is confident that Mike will be an effective COO and interim head of LIPA until we conclude our national search for our CEO,” said Howard Steinberg, Chairman of the LIPA Board. “I have seen Mike progress through the organization over the past 10 years and believe that he has the skills to serve LIPA and its customers well, as he takes on his new responsibilities.”

“I feel honored to have been chosen as COO of LIPA,” said Mr. Hervey. “I will continue LIPA’s focus on providing safe and reliable electric service, improving customer communications and customer service, , and promoting energy efficiency and renewable programs.”

The announcement was made at LIPA’s Board meeting and shared with employees at a firm wide meeting subsequent to the Board meeting. Chairman Steinberg shared his thoughts with LIPA staff of Kevin Law’s tenure at LIPA. “We are truly thankful to Kevin Law for his superior leadership during the past three and a half years. He has set the foundation for strategically planning for Long Island’s energy future. We wish him continued success at his new post as President of the Long Island Association (LIA).”

LIPA, a non-profit municipal electric provider, owns the retail electric Transmission and Distribution System on Long Island and provides electric service to more than 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. LIPA is the 2nd largest municipal electric utility in the nation in terms of electric revenues, 3rd largest in terms of customers served and the 7th largest in terms of electricity delivered. In 2010, LIPA outperformed all other overhead electric utilities in New York State for frequency of service interruptions, and ranked second for duration of service interruptions.
