Brown Goes Green as LIPA Partners with United Parcel Service to Make Long Island More Energy Efficient

UPS estimated to save over $280,000/yr in electric energy costs by participating in LIPA’s Efficiency Long Island Program

Uniondale, NY—The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) continues to partner with businesses and residents to help reduce the environmental impact of living and doing business on Long Island. LIPA provided $100,000 under its Commercial Efficiency Program for UPS’ commitment to become one of the most environmentally conscious Long Island companies by providing significant energy efficiency upgrades at their facilities and lowering their carbon footprint.

“LIPA is proud to sponsor programs that assist Long Island business and residential customers in achieving energy efficiency and independence,” said LIPA President and CEO Kevin S. Law. “By participating in LIPA’s Commercial Efficiency Program, UPS demonstrates not only how companies can save money but the important role businesses play to make Long Island a cleaner and more energy efficient place to live.”

LIPA worked with UPS on energy-efficient building renovations at their Farmingdale, Melville and Uniondale facilities which were eligible for a substantial rebate through LIPA’s Commercial Efficiency Program.

“Energy efficiency plays an important role in our overall sustainability efforts at UPS.  We continue to work hard on efficiency-improving initiatives like these lighting upgrades in our Long Island facilities,” said Doug Holland, UPS North Atlantic District Plant Engineering Manager.

All three facilities were upgraded to High Performance lighting systems, installing 2,840 T8 lighting fixtures. Through these improvements it is estimated the UPS will save over 1.5 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy usage per year, saving the company an estimated $285,000 in electric energy costs. Lighting accounts for the largest portion of energy used in commercial buildings, sometimes accounting for 25-30% of a facility’s total energy consumption.

The energy efficiency measures taken by UPS under LIPA’s Commercial Efficiency Program will reduce LIPA’s demand by over 260 kW. per year and will have the equivalent effect of reducing 167 cars off the road or 103,445 gallons of gas not consumed for a year.

“Energy efficiency and reducing our reliance on fossil fuel is essential to the future of Long Island, LIPA will continue to promote the benefits of energy efficiency and we are grateful to all who participate,” said Law.

LIPA’s Commercial Efficiency Program is part of LIPA’s Efficiency Long Island (ELI) initiative. Efficiency Long Island is a 10-year, $924 million energy efficiency program launched in 2009, which offers a wide array of incentives, rebates and initiatives to LIPA’s residential and commercial customers to assist them in reducing their energy usage and thereby lowering their bills.
