Melville, NY—Continuing to partner with Long Island businesses and help stimulate the local economy, the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) has collaborated with Leviton Manufacturing to assist in relocation of its global corporate headquarters from Little Neck, Queens to Melville, Long Island.

LIPA was able to make the relocation feasible by providing a significant economic development rate discount to Leviton as well as offering substantial rebates through its Commercial Efficiency Program for the installation of energy efficiency measures. LIPA President and CEO Kevin S. Law presented a rebate check for $48,955 to Leviton Manufacturing after taking advantage of LIPA’s financial incentives under its Commercial Efficiency Program.

Law. “LIPA’s Economic Development and efficiency programs assist businesses on Long Island succeed and grow by providing solutions to meet current and future energy-related needs.”

The relocation brought over 450 jobs to Long Island resulting in Leviton receiving a LIPA Economic Development Rate Discount of nearly $400,000 over the next five years.

“Reducing energy use and carbon footprint within our global operating infrastructure is a mission-critical component of Leviton's corporate mandate,” said Leviton Manufacturing President and CEO, Donald J. Hendler. “By partnering with the experts at LIPA’s Commercial Efficiency Program, we received the customized technical support we needed to achieve our efficiency goals. In June, 2009, Leviton completed reconstruction of a 5-story, 140,000 square-foot facility, in Melville, NY, with the latest “green building” materials and systems. LIPA worked closely with Leviton and their design team to provide guidance to assure the energy efficient construction eligible for substantial rebates through LIPA’s Commercial Efficiency Program.

The construction included the installation of high performance lighting, occupancy sensors and variable frequency drive motors. In total, this work qualified Leviton Manufacturing for $48,955 in LIPA rebates. These efficiency measures will reduce the company’s electric energy demand by an estimated 141 kilowatt (kW) and its electric energy usage by an estimated 646,433 kilowatt hours (kWh) per year, resulting in savings of approximately $116,000 annually.

Leviton Manufacturing’s avoided emissions, over a 20-year period, will be approximately 23,260 pounds of Sulfur Dioxide, 15,516 pounds of Nitrous Oxide, and 15,095,600 pounds of Carbon Dioxide which is the equivalent of removing 1,360 passenger cars off the road and a saving 842,860 gallons of gas consumed.

LIPA’s Commercial Efficiency Program is part of LIPA’s Efficiency Long Island (ELI) initiative. Efficiency Long Island is a 10-year, $924 million energy efficiency program launched in 2009, which offers a wide array of incentives, rebates and initiatives to LIPA’s residential and commercial customers to assist them in reducing their energy usage and thereby lowering their bills.
