Central Islip, NY— Today, Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) President and CEO Kevin S. Law presented United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Suffolk with a check for an energy efficiency rebate of $19,119.70, under the Not-for-Profit component of LIPA’s Efficiency Long Island (ELI) program. LIPA is committed to promoting energy efficiency on Long Island. Recently, UCP Suffolk partnered with LIPA to ensure energy efficiencies at its new Health Center specializing in medical and therapeutic services for individuals with disabilities.

The efficiency measures receiving incentives include high efficiency lighting, occupancy lighting sensors and HVAC equipment. Through these efficiency installations it is estimated that UCP will save approximately 103,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) per year, which equates to approximately $19,000 in energy savings. This project will also reduce LIPA’s energy demand by 10 kilowatts (kW), helping to reduce the need to burn more fossil fuel.

“LIPA is proud to partner with Suffolk United Cerebral Palsy to provide an energy efficient building to benefit the Long Island community,” said President and CEO Kevin S. Law.

By participating in LIPA’s Efficiency Long Island program, UCP will experience a cleaner, greener environment and save on energy costs that can be used to maintain and improve the quality of services provided.”

The fully accessible, comprehensive 25,000 sq. ft. Health Center in Central Islip was designed to meet the needs of individuals with a wide range of disabilities. The building was designed and equipped to exceed the standards of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA).

“We welcome LIPA’s partnership in creating energy efficiencies that will enable UCP Suffolk to maximize our delivery of health services to person’s with disabilities while at the same time benefiting the entire LI Community,” said Stephen H. Friedman, President and CEO of UCP Suffolk.

“It’s encouraging to see not-for-profits, like United Cerebral Palsy of Suffolk, benefit from this type of partnership that will allow them to cut down on operating costs and help them continue providing important services to our community,” said Assemblyman Philip Ramos (D-Central Islip). “LIPA’s Efficiency Long Island program is a great model for how we can help cut costs, reduce our dependence on foreign oil and help protect the environment.”

Since the inception of ELI in January, 2009, LIPA has rebated approximately $7.3 million for commercial energy efficient measures installed Island-wide, saving Long Island over 45 million kWh in energy savings and reducing the energy demand in LIPA’s service territory by 8,867 kW. These measures have also helped to reduce 25,757 tons of Carbon Dioxide an emission that is a large contributor to climate change. This is the equivalent of removing 4,280 passenger cars from the road.

Financial incentives were available through the not-for-profit Commercial Efficiency component of LIPA’s Efficiency Long Island program, which provides higher rebates than standard Commercial rebates to assist the not-for-profit community to take advantage of energy efficiency measures.
ELI is a 10-year, $924 million initiative, the largest efficiency program for a public utility in the country and is designed to reduce peak energy demand, thereby enabling LIPA to avoid having to construct the next Long Island power plant and also reducing greenhouse gasses that contribute to climate change.

Efficiency Long Island offers a wide array of incentives, rebates and initiatives to LIPA’s residential and commercial customers to assist them in reducing their energy usage and thereby lowering their bills.
