LIPA Offers Customers New Ways to Save Money and Energy This Summer with Three New Efficiency Programs
LIPA introduces rebates for qualified pool pumps, refrigerators, central air conditioning tune-ups, and continues cash incentives for room dehumidifiers
Uniondale, NY—With the summer months fast approaching, the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) is encouraging its customers to take advantage of some smart savings with rebates on two-speed and variable-speed pool pumps, refrigerators, dehumidifiers and central air conditioning tune-ups.
The rebates are part of LIPA’s Efficiency Long Island program, a 10-year,
$924 million energy efficiency effort launched this year, which offers a wide
array of incentives, rebates and initiatives to LIPA’s residential and
commercial customers to assist them in reducing their energy usage and thereby
lowering their bills. The Efficiency Long Island program is consistent with
Governor Paterson’s “45 by 15” program, which establishes the goal for New York
State to meet 45 percent of its electricity needs through improved energy
efficiency and renewable sources by the year 2015.
“As technology progresses we are seeing an increase in energy efficient
appliances," said LIPA President and CEO Kevin S. Law. “By taking advantage of
these incentives, we can maximize energy efficiency, reduce our carbon
footprint, and lower our energy bills.”
"Replacing wasteful household appliances with modern energy efficient models is a smart investment because it saves you money in utility bills and reduces greenhouse gas emissions and climate change," said Gordian Raacke, Executive Director of the not-for-profit Renewable Energy Long Island. "Thanks to LIPA's attractive incentives and cash rebates the up front costs will now be more affordable to the average Long Islander."
From now until July 31st, 2009, LIPA is for the first time offering electric customers who purchase or replace their older single-speed pool pump with a two-speed pump will be eligible for a $75 rebate, while installing a variable-speed pump can result in a $200 rebate. To be eligible for the rebate, customers must use a participating LIPA contractor for the installation.
Two-speed and variable-speed pool pumps are more energy-efficient than standard single-speed pool pumps and can cut your pool-related energy costs by 30% or more a season.
In addition to the pool pump rebates, LIPA is also offering residential customers $75 back on the purchase of select standard size ENERGY STAR® qualified refrigerators larger than 7.5 cubic feet. This offer will end on September 30th, 2009.
Also new, under Efficiency Long Island, is LIPA’s CheckMe! Tune-Up, a highly-accurate way to assess the status of your cooling system’s refrigerant charge and air flow – the two key elements to air conditioning efficiency. The procedure is a non-obtrusive process that involves only the use of hand-held diagnostic equipment. Customers who purchased and installed a central air conditioning system prior to January 1st, 2005 will receive a $100 rebate after filling out the rebate application with a LIPA participating Tune-Up contractor.
LIPA is also continuing its rebate programs on ENERGY STAR qualified dehumidifiers. From now until December 31st, 2009, LIPA customers will receive a $10 rebate on eligible ENERGY STAR qualified dehumidifiers. ENERGY STAR dehumidifiers remove the same amount of moisture from the air as a conventional model, but use 10-20% less energy. For a 40-pint unit, this can add up to savings of $40 per year, or $480 over the life of the unit.
