LIPA and Middle Country Central School District Partner to Help Make Long Island More Energy Efficient

Uniondale, NY—
The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), in its continuing effort to help Long Island become more energy efficient, announced today that the Middle Country Central School District has partnered with the Authority to upgrade its facilities by participating in LIPA’s Efficiency Long Island/Commercial Construction Program.

“By participating in Efficiency Long Island, the Middle Country Central School District is ensuring that their facilities will be more energy efficient and environmentally friendly while achieving long-term financial savings,” said LIPA President and CEO Kevin S. Law.

Middle Country Central School upgraded the lighting system in classrooms, replacing over 2,600 fixtures with energy- efficient high performance T8 light bulbs, installed 194 LED exit signs, and 303 occupancy sensors. Through these improvements it is estimated that Middle Country Central School will save up to 224,596.44 kilowatt hours (kwh) per year. The total cost of the lighting project was $750,000. Through its participation in LIPA’s Efficiency Long Island program, Middle Country Central was able to offset the cost with a $79,545 rebate from the Authority.

“Our partnership with LIPA will help reduce our energy costs and offset the school budget leaving more funding for student programs,” said Superintendent Roberta Gerold. “I would like to thank the LIPA staff for its assistance during this project and I look forward to working with them on future energy efficient upgrades.”

Law also acknowledged the efforts of Suffolk County Legislator Brian Beedenbender who assisted in facilitating the project.

Lighting accounts for the largest portion of energy used in commercial buildings, sometimes accounting for 25-30% of a facility’s total energy consumption.

The energy efficiency measures taken by Middle Country Central School under this initiative will have the equivalent effect of reducing 30 cars from the road for one year or 18,304 gallons of gas not consumed for a year.

Efficiency Long Island is a 10-year, $924 million energy efficiency program launched this year, which offers a wide array of incentives, rebates and initiatives to LIPA’s residential and commercial customers to assist them in reducing their energy usage and thereby lowering their bills.
