LIPA Launches Phase Two of Huntington Village Electric Reliability Project
Uniondale, NY July 10th, 2008 - The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA)
will be continuing its capital improvement project in the Huntington Village
area in order to meet the growing electric needs of the community. During July
and August, LIPA crews will begin the task of installing three (3) manholes for
new transformer banks that will ultimately improve service reliability and allow
the Village to continue as one of the Island’s liveliest and most popular
business districts.
“LIPA is embarking on this effort after meeting with Huntington Town
Supervisor Frank Petrone, the Huntington Chamber of Commerce and representatives
from the Business Improvement District,” said LIPA President and CEO Kevin S.
Law. “All the parties involved recognized LIPA’s desire to be proactive in
upgrading the Huntington Village infrastructure, that in some cases, dates back
to the 1930s. This action is to avoid disruptions during peak demand periods.”
The downtown area of Huntington Village has seen its load growth, or demand
for electricity increase by 20% over the past 10 years. While there has been a
steady replacement of some facilities over the years, the core electric system
that exists in Huntington Village was never designed to handle the
electric-intensive usage of 24/7 computers, HDTVs and large appliances.
The $5.5 million project began last year and resumed again on May 28, when
LIPA performed some overnight construction work to switch customers onto parts
of the new system. Beginning later this month and continuing into August, LIPA
will be installing three new manholes – one on the north side of Main Street,
100’ feet west of Stewart Avenue, one on the north side of High Street, 100’
feet east of New Street, and the last in the Town of Huntington municipal
parking lot on the east side of West Neck Road, 200’ feet north of Main Street.
No electrical service interruptions will be associated with this work.
The manhole on Main Street will be a night time work project, as directed by
the State Department of Transportation. Two lanes will be closed and five to
seven curbside parking spaces will be lost for approximately seven days.
Additionally, the sidewalk will be narrowed due to the trenching activity.
Access to all businesses will be maintained at all times.
The work on High Street will require a lane closure. No businesses have
entrances on High Street within the work zone, therefore no impact on the
business district is anticipated. The work on High Street will last 10 days.
The final manhole, in the municipal parking area off West Neck Road, will
impact four to seven parking spaces. Traffic flow in the parking lot will be
rerouted during the anticipated seven day work period.
LIPA and its contractors will take all appropriate measures to ensure the
worksite is secure and safe after hours. Informational signs will be placed at
all locations citing the duration of the work, once the sequencing of the
construction activity is determined. All work will be completed prior to Labor
Day weekend. |
