| WHAT: |
The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), in
partnership with American Superconductor, the United States Department
of Energy, Nexans and Air Liquide, will hold a press conference to
discuss the commissioning of the world’s largest and highest-voltage
superconductor electric transmission cable system installed in Holbrook.
The superconductor cable can carry 150 times the power of a conventional
copper wire of similar size. The 138kV system is capable of carrying 574
megawatts of power in a right-of-way of only four feet. This
cutting-edge technology, among other benefits, could supply economical
electric power to areas with transmission bottlenecks. |
