A New Way of Going Green
LIPA’s Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® Program

Uniondale, NY—February 8, 2008—Many Long Islanders hear the talk about “going green” and think—how can I make a difference? It is true that measures like installing solar panels on your home can be costly; however, there are ways, on a smaller scale, to make a difference while saving money at the same time.

The Long Island Power Authority’s (LIPA) Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program offers residential customers an opportunity to improve overall energy efficiency, comfort and safety, with features such as special cash incentives, comprehensive home assessments, and free public education seminars. The program can help ratepayers save up to 40% on energy costs.

The free seminar for the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program will be held at Island Park Public Library, 176 Long Beach Road, Island Park, NY on Wednesday, February 20th, at 6:30PM. Homeowners are invited to learn how they can obtain a Comprehensive Home Assessment by an accredited Building Performance Institute (BPI) contractor, and implement cost effective measures for improving their home’s overall energy efficiency.

“An energy efficient home rewards its owner with years and years of savings,” said LIPA President and CEO Kevin S. Law. “Even making small changes such as changing to Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs), for which LIPA provides rebates, can save the typical electric consumer $60 a year because they use 75% less electricity. And with home heating costs continuing on the rise, LIPA’s Home Performance programs can help consumers save on heating costs too,” Law said.

For energy efficient electrical home improvements totaling $2,500 or more, LIPA offers $500 cash back. As an extra incentive, the limited time cash back offer has been extended to April 30, 2008, for work completed by an approved certified contractor. In addition, to help eligible homeowners get the work done faster, low interest financing or 10% cash-back options are also available.

The LIPA Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program created a network of independent home improvement contractors that are accredited by the Building Performance Institute (BPI) and labeled Home Performance contractors. BPI is a national resource for building science technology that sets standards for assessing and improving the energy performance, as well as the health and safety of homes.

Home Performance contractors have been trained in taking a “whole-house” approach when testing homes and identifying necessary energy efficiency improvements. This approach considers the inter-relationship between the various systems within a home (insulation, doors and windows, mechanicals and air leakage) and factors these relationships into a work scope designed to enhance the energy model of your home.

The time has never been better to maximize your home’s performance for greater energy and environmental savings.
