A New Way of Going Green
LIPA & Town of Southold Host Home Performance with ENERGY STAR Program
Uniondale, NY—Many Long Islanders hear the talk about going green and think—how can I make a difference? It is true that measures like installing solar panels on your home can be costly; however, there are ways, on a smaller scale, to make a difference while saving money at the same time.
The Long Island Power Authority’s (LIPA) Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program offers residential customers an opportunity to improve overall energy efficiency, comfort and safety, with features such as special cash incentives, comprehensive home assessments, and free public education seminars. The program can help rate payers save up to 40% on energy costs.
The first free seminar for the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program in 2008 will be held in Southold Town Hall, 53905 Main Road, Southold, NY on Wednesday, January 9, at 7:00PM. The seminar is being sponsored by LIPA, the Town of Southold, and the Town of Southold Renewable Energy Committee. Homeowners are invited to learn how they can obtain a Comprehensive Home Assessment by an accredited Building Performance Institute (BPI) contractor, and implement cost effective measures for improving their home’s overall energy efficiency.
“An energy efficient home rewards its owner with years and years of savings,” said LIPA President and CEO Kevin S. Law. “Even making small changes such as changing to Compact Fluorescent bulbs (CFLs), for which LIPA provides rebates, or ENERGY STAR fixtures can save the typical electric consumer $60 a year because they use 75% less electricity. And with home heating costs expected to increase substantially this winter, LIPA’s Home Performance programs can help consumers save on heating costs too,” Law said.
"The majority of Southold Town residents believe in conservation of our lands, marinas, and our tax dollars,” said Southold Supervisor Scott Russell. “This energy performance seminar is a friendly activity that will help educate people and enable them to practice energy conservation in their own homes and places of business.
“I'd like to see a lot of people take advantage of what this LIPA seminar has to offer,” Russell said. “The building performance experts at this seminar know how to find and fix costly mechanical performance problems. I encourage people to take action and do some of the things that will be covered in this home performance seminar.”
"On the one hand, this LIPA Home Performance Seminar is an example of the high degree of commitment and cooperation shown by LIPA, local renewable energy organizations, local energy contractors, and Southold Town leaders,” said Mr. Anthony Wolbert, member of the Southold Town Renewable Energy Committee. “On the other hand, it is a real eye-opener that will show people how to start saving today. I believe there will be a great applause.”
For improvement measures—that directly result in electric savings— totaling $2,500 or more, a $500 cash back offer on Energy Efficient Home Improvements through LIPA’s Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program is available. As an extra incentive, the limited time cash back offer has now been extended to February 1, 2008, for work completed by an approved certified contractor. In addition, to help eligible homeowners get the work done faster, low interest financing or 10% cash-back options are also available.
The LIPA Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program created a network of
independent home improvement contractors that are accredited by the Building
Performance Institute (BPI) and labeled Home Performance contractors. BPI is a
national resource for building science technology that sets standards for
assessing and improving the energy performance, as well as the health and safety
of homes.
Home Performance contractors have been trained in taking a “whole-house”
approach when testing homes and identifying necessary energy efficiency
improvements. This approach considers the inter-relationship between the various
systems within a home (insulation, doors and windows, mechanicals and air
leakage) and factors these relationships into a work scope designed to enhance
the energy model of your home.
The time has never been better to maximize your home’s performance for greater energy and environmental savings.
