LIPA and the Town of Brookhaven Join Together to Promote Energy Efficiency
Uniondale, NY— As the cost of energy rises, the Long
Island Power Authority (LIPA) and the Town of Brookhaven are joining together to
promote energy efficiency. LIPA and the Town are introducing eligible customers
to programs to help lower energy costs, such as the Residential Energy
Affordability Partnership (REAP).
REAP offers free energy audits for LIPA customers who are income eligible. The audits supply homeowners with information to help households control their energy costs, which lower electric bills and make homes healthier and safer. In addition, customers that qualify may receive energy-saving devices, such as an ENERGY STAR rated refrigerator and/or compact-fluorescent light bulbs (CFL)’s.
“Long Islanders need to take matters into their own hands in order to lower their electric bills. Energy efficiency and conservation are the best ways to do that,” said LIPA President and CEO Kevin S. Law. “LIPA’s REAP program is available to help save the customers of Brookhaven hundreds of dollars on their energy bills. This is a win-win situation for the Town and the environment of Long Island.
“These programs will help our residents reduce energy consumption, heat their homes more efficiently, save money and protect the environment,” said Brookhaven Town Supervisor Brian X. Foley. “I encourage LIPA to continue its efforts to reach out to the public with information and assistance with energy conservation.”
“These programs are another benefit from the Caithness Energy Center project that will be of great assistance to residents in the area surrounding the plant who are looking to cut their energy costs and more efficiently heat their homes,” said Councilwoman Connie Kepert.
“LIPA and the Town are offering residents the chance to save money and improve the comfort of their homes with these energy efficiency programs,” said Councilman Tim Mazzei. “I encourage Town residents to call LIPA to find out how they can make their homes more energy efficient and save their hard-earned dollars.”
More than 30,000 LIPA customers have participated in REAP since 2000. Since then, participants have received more than 200,000 CFLs and nearly 9,000 refrigerators helping to reduce electricity consumption by more than 30 million kilowatt hours and saving millions of dollars on energy bills.
In order to be eligible for the REAP program, customers must fit the following criteria: be a LIPA electric customer, live in a one-to four-family home and meet the income guidelines (70% of the median income). For example, a family of four can earn a maximum household salary of or below $65,660 to be eligible.
As one of the benefits resulting from the Caithness Long Island Energy project, LIPA and the Town of Brookhaven have agreed to work together to promote REAP to residents of Bellport, Brookhaven, East Patchogue, Gordon Heights, Medford, North Bellport and Yaphank.
REAP is part of LIPA’s Clean Energy Initiative (CEI), which is a 10-year, $355-million commitment to promote clean, renewable electric generation technologies, energy conservation and efficiency.
LIPA, a non-profit municipal electric provider, owns the retail electric Transmission and Distribution System on Long Island and provides electric service to more than 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. LIPA is the 2nd largest municipal electric utility in the nation in terms of electric revenues, 3rd largest in terms of customers served and the 7th largest in terms of electricity delivered. In 2008, LIPA outperformed all other overhead electric utilities in New York State for frequency of service interruptions, and ranked second for duration of service interruptions. LIPA does not provide natural gas service or own any on-island generating assets. More information about LIPA can be found online at: http://www.lipower.org.
