LIPA’s Receives “Exemplary Program” award from ACEEE for Energy Efficiency Programs
Uniondale, NY—The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA)
is pleased to announce that the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy
(ACEEE), a nonprofit research group based in Washington, D.C., has recognized
LIPA’s Residential Lighting & Appliance Program and Cool Homes Program as
“exemplary programs.” The program is part of a national awards program to honor
America’s leading energy efficiency programs. LIPA’s Residential Lighting &
Appliance program received this recognition in partnership with the Northeast
Energy Efficiency Partnership (NEEP).
LIPA’s Residential Lighting & Appliance program is part of its Clean Energy Initiative (CEI), a 10 year, $355 million dollar commitment to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. The program to date has rebated over 4 million compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL’s) on LI since inception, which equates to almost 15 megawatts (MW) of electricity being conserved. That’s enough electricity to power 15,000 average-sized homes. In addition to lighting, LIPA promotes the use of all ENERGY STAR qualified products to its customers.
Since its inception in 1999, LIPA’s energy efficiency programs have resulted in a combined savings of over 1,800 gigawatt hours of electricity, which is enough to power nearly 200,000 average-sized Long Island homes for about 1 year. The energy reduction also resulted in saving over 2 million barrels of oil, which translates into lower power plant emissions.
LIPA in partnership with NEEP received the award at a recognition program at ACEEE’s Energy Efficiency as a Resource Conference, held in Berkeley, California.
In addition to the Exemplary Award for Residential Lighting and Appliances Program and Cool Homes Program, LIPA received honorable mention for its ENERGY STAR labeled Homes Program, and Commercial Construction Program.
“Over the last 10 years LIPA has created one of the most ambitious programs of its kind in the nation to promote clean new electric generation technologies,” said CEO/President Richard M. Kessel. “LIPA is honored and proud to be recognized by ACEEE for four of its Clean Energy Initiative programs.”
Programs selected for this honor were judged especially noteworthy for their effectiveness and innovation in helping customers achieve greater levels of energy efficiency in their homes and business facilities. “These programs are delivering energy savings that are critical in helping customers cope with today’s high energy costs, plus they make an important environmental contribution because they help reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” noted Martin Kushler, Ph.D., ACEEE’s Utilities Program Director. He added, “This is truly a ‘win-win’ situation.”
“ACEEE conducted this national review to recognize outstanding energy
efficiency programs and honor the people and organizations responsible for their
success,” explained Dan York, Ph.D., the Project Director for this effort. He
added: “Programs such as LIPA’s Residential Lighting & Appliance Program
demonstrate the very real value of energy efficiency to the customers it
serves.”
NEEP is a regional nonprofit organization founded in 1996. The mission is to
promote energy efficiency in homes, buildings and industry in the Northeast U.S.
through regionally coordinated programs and policies that increase the use of
energy efficient products, services and practices, and that help achieve a
cleaner environment and a more reliable and affordable energy system.
ACEEE is a nonprofit organization dedicated to research and policy development
to advance energy efficiency as a means of promoting both economic prosperity
and environmental protection. For more information, visit

LIPA, a non-profit municipal electric provider, owns the retail electric Transmission and Distribution System on Long Island and provides electric service to more than 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. LIPA is the 2nd largest municipal electric utility in the nation in terms of electric revenues, 3rd largest in terms of customers served and the 7th largest in terms of electricity delivered. In 2010, LIPA outperformed all other overhead electric utilities in New York State for frequency of service interruptions, and ranked second for duration of service interruptions. LIPA does not provide natural gas service or own any on-island generating assets. More information about LIPA can be found online at: http://www.lipower.org.
