LIPA is Recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy with the Energy Star Excellence in Energy Star Promotion Award Protecting the Environment through Energy Efficiency

Uniondale, NY—
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE) have named the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) as a 2007 Excellence in ENERGY STAR Promotion Award winner for its outstanding contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by promoting energy-efficient products, services and/or homes. LIPA’s accomplishments were recognized at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. recently.

LIPA, an ENERGY STAR partner since 1999, was honored for promoting day-to-day energy efficiency activities through its Residential Lighting and Appliance Program, and with events such as it’s Earth Day and Change a Light promotions that meet EPA and the Department of Energy’s guidelines for energy efficiency. With more then 1.1 million customers, LIPA is the third largest public power utility in the United States in terms of customers served.

“The Long Island Power Authority understands the importance and benefits of energy efficiency; partnering with ENERGY STAR helps us share that with our customers,” said LIPA CEO and President, Richard M. Kessel. “We are constantly working to educate consumers on how the use of ENERGY STAR can save LIPA customers over $40 million of lifetime savings. LIPA’s Clean Energy Initiative Programs can save LIPA customers money and contribute to a healthy environment. We take pride in our work with ENERGY STAR to make energy efficiency an everyday practice.”

“Partners such as the Long Island Power Authority are raising awareness of how each of us can protect our environment through energy efficiency and ENERGY STAR,” said Bill Wehrum acting assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation. “They are doing an outstanding job of promoting energy efficient products, services, homes and programs that help consumers save money and protect our environment.”

Under its Clean Energy Initiative, Residential Lighting and Appliance Program LIPA is working to help create a sustainable energy future for Long Island residents for generations to come. As a result of LIPA’s Residential Lighting Program incentives, over 4,000,000 ENERGY STAR qualified compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL’s), 223,028 ENERGY STAR qualified lighting fixtures and torchieres were purchased by LIPA customers in conjunction with LIPA program offerings. As of December, 2006 on Long Island 15.5 megawatts (MW) of electricity have been conserved through the use of CFL’s. That is enough electricity to power 15,500 average-sized homes.

Through five (5) main elements in 2006 that include retailer training, in-store promotions and community events, cooperative advertising, Earth Day, Change a Light promotions and the Change a Light Pledge campaign, LIPA has continually strived to expand its ENERGY Star program. LIPA held 30 formal retailer training sessions resulting in over 300 sales associates trained. During its Earth Day and Change a Light promotions LIPA rebated over 600,000 cfl’s. Last year alone, Americans with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved $14 billion on their energy bills and reduced greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of more than 25 million vehicles.

The Excellence in ENERGY STAR Promotion Award is given to a variety of organizations to recognize their efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce pollution, resulting in significant cost savings. Award winners are selected from more than 9,000 organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program.

ENERGY STAR was introduced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1992 as a voluntary market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through increased energy efficiency. Today, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy, the program offers businesses and consumers energy-efficient solutions to save energy, money and help protect the environment for future generations. More than 9,000 organizations are ENERGY STAR partners committed to improving the energy efficiency of products, homes and businesses.
