Getting the Most for Your Winter Energy Dollars
Uniondale — In anticipation of those long cold winter days
ahead, the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) would like to remind its customers
that by taking a few easy to follow recommendations they can get the most for
their energy dollars.
Using a few inexpensive energy-efficient measures, like those that follow, can significantly reduce winter energy bills and, at the same time, improve the environment.
- Check the filters in the heating system monthly and have it serviced periodically by a licensed professional.
- Caulking and weather-stripping cracks in walls and floors, windows and doors will save fuel and money.
- Close the fireplace damper tightly when not in use.
- During the day, let sunlight in by opening the curtains on windows facing the sun to warm the room and reduce heating costs. At night keep drapes and curtains closed to keep the warmth inside.
- Raising the humidity in the home will produce personal comfort at a lower thermostat setting and save money.
- Insulate heating hot air ducts and hot water pipes that provide heat to the rooms in your home.
- Keeping your heating thermostat at the lowest temperature comfortable for you will save on heating costs.
It’s also wise to replace old light bulbs with Compact Fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). Lighting accounts for 15% of home electric use. CFL’s last ten times longer and use 75% less electricity.
LIPA’s conservation programs and Clean Energy Initiative can help lower energy costs and use energy more efficiently. LIPA’s Clean Energy Initiative (CEI) is one of the most ambitious and comprehensive programs of its kind in the nation. The CEI is a 10-year, $355-million dollar commitment to promote clean, renewable electric generation technologies and energy conservation and efficiency.
