Statement by Richard M. Kessel
Chairman, Long Island Power Authority

“LIPA intends to seek a full review of all of its rates, charges and surcharges – in particular its fuel surcharge and tax surcharges to which it makes payments to Nassau and Suffolk Counties, municipalities and school districts – before the Public Service Commission and/or an appropriate regulatory body within the next 60 days.

“While there is no legal requirement to seek such a review nor is any utility in New York State required to seek approval of the pass through of higher fuel costs, LIPA believes that an objective review by an independent body will assure ratepayers that all of LIPA’s charges are appropriate and in fact that LIPA is undercharging for skyrocketing oil and gas prices.”
