LIPA Wellness Programs Kickoff with CPR Training

Uniondale, NY—October 26, 2001—According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease and stroke are the number one and number three causes of death in the United States. Every year more than 950,000 adult Americans die from cardiovascular diseases. Sudden cardiac arrest claims the lives of 220,000 of those Americans. Many of these lives could be saved if the bystanders act promptly to phone 911 and begin CPR.

To help promote good health among it employees and to potentially save theirs or someone else’s life the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) today began providing in-house CPR training for its employees. Representatives from the Nassau County American Red Cross provided the on-site instruction.

“CPR training is an invaluable skill that could someday save someone’s life,” said LIPA Chairman Richard M. Kessel. LIPA believes every employee should be trained in this technique.”

LIPA is currently evaluating other potential Wellness Programs that can meet the needs of its employees, and will implement them in the near future.

The Long Island Power Authority owns the electric retail business on Long Island. LIPA provides electric service to nearly 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens.
