LIPA Recommends 66 Ways to Save Energy , Lower Electric Bills and Help the Environment

Uniondale, NY-July 25, 2000- According to the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), a sufficient supply of electricity will be available to meet normal summer demand on Long Island. However, conservation and efficient energy use will be essential for summer 2000 particularly during extreme heat conditions.

As part of its five year $160 million Clean Energy Initiative (CEI), a program proposed by Governor George Pataki and designed to help customers save energy and lower their electric bills and LIPA's ongoing commitment to vigorously promote energy conservation, LIPA has released its latest energy saving brochure titled, 66 Ways to Save Energy and Lower Your Electric Bill. This brochure contains valuable advice on heating, cooling, laundry, hot water use and many other energy saving, cost-cutting tips.

"LIPA is working hard to get the message out to its customers that conserving electricity may be the key to a trouble free summer," said LIPA Chairman, Richard M. Kessel. " But LIPA wants its customers to understand that energy conservation is not just a seasonal endeavor. Energy conservation should be a day-by-day, year-round practice. LIPA's new brochure66 Ways to Save Energy and Lower Your Electric Bill, will help customers save energy by using electricity more efficiently."

LIPA's energy conservation programs are designed to respond to the extraordinary growth in Long Island's demand for electricity. LIPA's 20% rate reduction, Long Island's booming economy and the growth in appliance use, especially room air conditioners, have contributed to this growth. According to an internal survey, Long Islanders purchased approximately 470,000 air conditioners last year, almost three times the number sold in 1998. LIPA's conservation programs can help both residential and commercial customers lower energy costs and use energy more efficiently.

LIPA also published its second EnergyWise catalog this year, offering energy-efficient lighting fixtures, light bulbs, and other energy-efficient products to its customers at significant savings. When LIPA published its first EnergyWise catalog in September of 1999, it became the first electric utility in New York State to provide its customers with the opportunity to purchase energy-efficient products through a catalog.

LIPA strongly recommends that all Long Islanders learn more about what they can do to save energy, save money and protect the environment. To find out more visit the LIPA Web site at www.lipower.org or call the EnergyWise Infoline number at 1-800-692-2626.

The Long Island Power Authority owns the retail electric system on Long Island. LIPA provides electric service to nearly 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens.
