Southampton College Wind Turbine
A Bergey Windpower 10 kW wind turbine was installed in May
2002 at Long Island University’s Southampton College campus.
The turbine was installed atop a self-supporting lattice
tower, and features state-of-the-art blades recently designed in
conjunction with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
The Southampton turbine is expected to generate 13,200 kWh
per year.
This electricity is fed into the College’s electrical system
and will be used by the Montauk dormitory complex. Any power
needs of the College that are not met by the wind turbine will
continue to be supplied by the Long Island Power Authority
(LIPA).
The turbine was installed as part of the U.S. Department of
Energy’s Wind Powering America program. Under this program, AWS
Scientific, Inc., based in Albany, NY, installed four turbines
in New York and New Jersey. Southampton College was selected as
a host site due to their keen interest in incorporating
renewable energy into their educational programs, as well as the
excellent wind resource on eastern Long Island.
LIPA co-sponsored the turbine installation as part of its
commitment to renewable energy, and to bring future plans for
wind energy on Long Island a little closer to fruition with the
installation of small units for demonstration purposes.
Data is being collected on the power and voltage output of the
turbine, as well as wind speed, wind direction, and air
temperature. This data will be used by the Department of Energy.
Southampton College is receiving data for use in its
educational programs. |
