How to Get Started

If you want to purchase a PV system, you are probably going to need a PV dealer/installer. You can choose to  contact one of LIPA's Solar Contractors. You may also check your local phone directly under Solar Energy Equipment or contact LI Shines for a list of Solar Contractors or PV installers. It is always advisable to obtain several bids before making a selection.

Verify a PV installers credentials and compare prices for equivalent systems. The bids should also include the total costs for getting the system up and running, including hardware, installation, connection to the grid, permitting, sales tax, and warranty.

You can use the Solar Pioneer Checklist to help you shop wisely.

Solar Contractors can help you get started in a number of ways. A Solar Contractor can:
  • Assess the amount of sunlight you get in your location
  • Determine the kind and size of PV system you need
  • Analyze costs of different PV systems
  • Install and maintain your PV system
  • Assist with permitting issues such as building and electrical permits, homeowners associations, and required National Electric Code and IEEE certifications.

LIPA Rebates
Before a PV system can be installed, the PV contractor can help you complete and sign LIPA's Rebate Form and two original Net Metering Service Agreements. The Net Metering Service Agreement specifies the terms and conditions under which your PV system can be connected to the utility grid and is required for all utility-interconnected PV systems.

You or your PV contractor will forward together, completed and signed, the original rebate application, along with two original LIPA Net Metering Service Agreements to:

LIPA
Distributed Resource Management
175 East Old Country Road
Hicksville, NY 11801

After LIPA pre-approves your completed Net Metering Service Application, the PV contractor will obtain the necessary PV system equipment. The PV contractor should also assist you in obtaining all necessary building and electrical permits and PV system equipment. The installation must be inspected by an electrical inspector. Following the completion of your PV system installation and prior to LIPA conducting a functional test of your PV system, setting the appropriate meter and processing your rebate, you must provide LIPA with a temporary or copy of the electric inspection certificate issued by the Board of Fire Underwriters or agency having jurisdiction. You may mail a copy of the temporary electric inspection certificate to Distributed Resource Management or send by fax to 516-545-6134.

Upon installation of your PV system, you or the PV contractor will need to forward a copy of the itemized product invoice(s) to LIPA. Your itemized invoice(s) must contain all PV equipment model numbers and include purchase/installation date and the assigned LIPA application number. If any information is missing from your product invoice(s), LIPA will not be able to determine your eligibility for a rebate. LIPA provides rebates based on the product invoice(s). All product invoices must be mailed to: LIPA Solar Pioneer Program, Rebate Processing, 25 Hub Drive, Melville NY 11747 or faxed to 631-755-5375.

Upon receipt of the PV invoice, LIPA will process your rebate within 60 days. An inspection of your installed PV system may be required by LIPA prior to the issuance of a rebate check.
