The largest privately-owned commercial application of
photovoltaic (solar power) technology in the world, is here on
Long Island!
LIPA and the Fala DM Group in Farmingdale (Fala), one of the
nation’s leading direct mail and business communications
companies, have completed one of the world’s largest commercial
rooftop solar electric systems.
Phase I
The first and largest phase of the system was installed at Fala’s
Daniel Street headquarters in Farmingdale and is comprised of some
8,160 panels covering 61,800 sq. ft.
Phase II
The second phase of the system was installed at Fala’s two
facilities on Marcus Drive in Melville. At Fala’s 70 Marcus Dr.
location, about 2,532 panels will cover some 19,900 sq.ft. of
rooftop, and at the 75 Marcus Dr. location 2,732 panels will cove
21,000 sq.ft.
Project Statistics
This solar energy project, which will stand among the top five
largest solar systems in the world, reflects what can be achieved
through the foresight and partnering of the private and public
sectors.
-
1.01 megawatt (MW) photovoltaic system
-
Consists of 13,424 PowerLight PV roof panels
-
Solar array size of 102,700 sq. ft. on three buildings
-
Approximately 1,065,000 kWh of power annually
-
Reduces Fala’s energy bill by 10%
-
Reduces Fala's peak load electricity by an estimated 33%
-
Enough to power about 125 average-sized LI homes.
-
Designed, manufactured and installed by PowerLight
Fala, long recognized as a pioneer in the use of advanced
technologies for its direct mail business, decided to install
the $6.1 million solar system with LIPA agreeing to provide a
one-time $4.1 million research grant to help underwrite the
capital cost of the system.
