Environmental Benefits

By reducing the amount of fossil fuel generated electricity needed by Fala, over the next 25 years Long Island will avoid:

  • Over 20,000 tons of carbon dioxide
  • Over 30 tons of Nitrous Oxides (NOX)
  • Over 75 tons of Sulfur Dioxides (SOX)

This is roughly equivalent to:

  • Planting 5,700 acres of trees
  • Removing 3,900 cars from Long Island roads
  • Not driving almost 50,000,000 miles
  • Avoiding the burning of almost 45,000 barrels of oil
Fala
Fala has over 700 employees at three state-of-the-art facilities on Long Island comprising over 300,000 square feet of space. Annually, Fala consumes about 10,800 - megawatt hours of electricity. The 1.01 MW solar system will produce about 1,065-megawatt hours of electricity annually, which the company will use in its daily operation.

LIPA
For its part, LIPA stands to gain a significant amount of first-hand data regarding the large-scale application of renewable energy technologies in a high technology setting. At the same time, the joint solar project will allow LIPA, which serves some 1.1 million electric consumers in Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens, to evaluate the effectiveness of photovoltaics as a resource to meet Long Island's ever-growing demand for electricity.

Fala, long recognized as a pioneer in the use of advanced technologies for its direct mail business, decided to install the $6.1 million solar system with LIPA agreeing to provide a one-time $4.1 million research grant to help underwrite the capital cost of the system.
