Northport to Norwalk Cable Replacement

LIPA and Connecticut Light & Power Company (CL&P) replaced the 300 megawatt electric transmission cable system that connects Long Island, New York with southwest Connecticut as part of a settlement agreement between the two states that allowed commercial operation of the Cross-Sound Cable between Shoreham, New York and New Haven, Connecticut.

LIPA and CL&P have jointly owned and operated the seven cables between Northport and Norwalk, which are known as the 1385 cables. Replacement of the 1385 cables was necessary because of a high outage rate, as well as environmental issues associated with fluid leaks from a number of anchor drags. The new cables will be solid core cables that will be buried beneath the floor of the Long Island Sound. They will help strengthen reliability of the electric system on both sides of the Sound.

Removal of the old cables began in the fall of 2007. Installation of the new cables began in early 2008.
