Caithness LI Energy Center
The Caithness Long Island Energy Center (CLIEC) is the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly power plant on Long Island. It produces up to 350 megawatts of electricity utilizing its combined cycle design.
CLIEC was selected as the on-Island component of a diverse portfolio of resources developed under a comprehensive request for proposals process in accordance with the procurement requirements of the State of New York.
The Caithness facility is built in an industrial park in Yaphank in the Brookhaven Town Empire Zone. It is further away from residences than any other power plant on Long Island. The Final Environmental Impact Statement issued under a State Environmental Quality Review Act process concluded that the Caithness project will have no negative impact on the environment or on public health.
A power purchase agreement between LIPA and Caithness Long Island was approved by the Office of the State Comptroller on November 6, 2006. Construction began in the spring of 2007.
CLIEC came on line in July of 2009 and is now generating electricity for LIPA’s customers. Additionally, Caithness has reported that emissions from this facility are even lower than originally expected and are far below permit limits.
