Powering Long Island
This section describes some of the actions LIPA has taken to provide a reliable supply of electricity for its customers.
Caithness Long Island Energy Center
The Caithness Long Island Energy Center (CLIEC) will be the
most energy efficient and environmentally friendly power
plant on Long Island. It will produce up to 350 megawatts of
electricity.
Draft LIPA Energy Master Plan
2008-2017
On January 31, 2008, Long Island Power Authority (LIPA)
President and CEO Kevin S. Law kicked off the
development of the 2008-2017 LIPA Energy Master
Plan.
Neptune Cable
The Neptune Regional Transmission System is an electric
transmission cable system that links Long Island to diverse,
lower cost sources of energy supply in New Jersey,
Pennsylvania and eleven other states in the mid-Atlantic and
Ohio River Valley regions. It provides up to 660 megawatts
of electricity to help meet Long Island's needs.
Northport to Norwalk Cable
Replacement
LIPA and Connecticut Light & Power Company (CL&P) are
replacing the 300 megawatt electric transmission cable
system that connects Long Island, New York with southwest
Connecticut as part of a settlement agreement between the
two states that allowed commercial operation of the
Cross-Sound Cable between Shoreham, New York and New Haven,
Connecticut.
Repowering: Northport & Port Jefferson Power
Stations
LIPA and National Grid issued an RFP in December of 2007 for a study to
investigate the economic and technical feasibility of repowering options at the
Northport and Port Jefferson Power Stations.
Southampton to Bridgehampton Transmission Line
To keep up with electric demand on the South Fork, LIPA is
evaluating an upgrade of its Southampton to Bridgehampton
Transmission Line.
