Peak Reduction Program
LIPA would like to thank you for your participation in our Peak Reduction Program. Reducing your electric load, when we asked for help, allowed LIPA to meet the electric needs of Long Island during critical peak summer days when demand for electricity was extremely high. In parallel with these Peak Reduction Program efforts, we have aggressively added new supply resources and continued with our strong commitment to energy conservation. These actions, along with the introduction of new demand response programs available in the marketplace, have caused us to reassess the continuation of our Peak Reduction Program. As a result, we have chosen to discontinue this program for the reasons cited below.
Today, LIPA is in an excellent position to meet the electric needs of our customers. We continue to make significant strides securing additional supplies of electricity, such as the Cross Sound and Neptune Cables, which added 990 Megawatts of capability to our system. In 2009, the Caithness Long Island Energy Center is expected to come on line adding another 350 Megawatts to our electric capacity.
LIPA is also continuing its aggressive approach to assist our customers with lowering their use of electric energy through our Clean Energy Initiative. As we continue with this program, we are working to ensure that our programs meet the State of NY's goals to reduce all Long Islanders’ electric demand by 15% by 2015; while also meeting the need for an adequate and more environmentally-friendly electric supply for our customers’ continually growing needs.
Finally, new Energy Service Companies offering different types of demand reduction products and services to the marketplace are now available. A list of these qualified companies can be found on the New York’s Independent System Operator (NYISO) Web site.
